While Nikon has taken all possible measures to guarantee the high quality expected of Nikon products, it has come to our attention that chassis components in a limited number of COOLPIX L4 cameras were manufactured using an unapproved material. These chassis components do not satisfy Nikon standards for strength and durability.

Nikon believes that the use of the unapproved material in chassis components, combined with other factors, contributed in some way to five incidents involving COOLPIX L4 cameras sold in Canada, in which a screw inside the camera came loose, resulting in a short circuit that generated sufficient heat to melt a portion of the rear camera cover near the LCD monitor. All of these incidents can be traced to a group of COOLPIX L4 cameras produced over a short period of time. Nikon believes that these five incidents are most likely the result of the use of the unapproved material combined with an as yet unidentified event during production or shipping, or possibly with improper use, and does not believe at this time that the problem affected any units other than those manufactured during the identified period of time.

Nevertheless, as a measure of our commitment to providing customers with only the highest quality products, Nikon has decided to issue this advisory to all owners of COOLPIX L4 cameras purchased in Australia.

Your COOLPIX L4 camera may be one of those manufactured with the unapproved material if its serial number is in the range of 70069405 to 70103072. The serial number for your COOLPIX L4 camera is an eight (8) digit number located on the bottom of the camera.

If your COOLPIX L4 camera is one of those that is affected, please remove the batteries from your camera and return it to your nearest Nikon service representative.

If your COOLPIX L4 camera is determined to be one of those manufactured with the unapproved material, Nikon will either repair or replace related components, free of charge, regardless of the status of your warranty.
